PILAR JURADO ELECTED BY THE EU AND ITS MEMBER STATES AS THE SOLE CANDIDATE FOR SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE WCO

Pilar Jurado, general director of the Spanish Department of Customs and Excise has been chosen by the European Union and its Member States as the sole and common candidate for the position of Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO).

It is the first time that the twenty-eight member states promote a common candidate to lead the WCO

The EU is not represented as a whole at the WCO; instead, each of its twenty-eight member states has its own vote, and, despite being the largest net contributor to the organization, it does not have any representatives on its decision-making bodies.

This decision is the result of the European Council of the 28th of June 2017, where Pilar Jurado was elected as the EU’s sole candidate for the General Secretariat of the WCO in 2018.
